Dental Hygiene in Palmers Green

The Simple Way to Prevent Gum Disease and Protect Your Health

Your dental hygiene visits are the foundation of a healthy mouth. By seeing your hygienist regularly, you stop harmful bacteria from building up in the areas your toothbrush can’t reach. This helps protect your teeth and gums, lowers your risk of tooth decay and gum disease, and keeps your smile looking its best.

When you make hygiene a habit, you’re not just looking after your mouth—you’re protecting your overall health for years to come.

Hygiene Care Supports Overall Health

Diabetes: Gum disease can make your blood sugar harder to control. Looking after your gums may help you keep levels steadier.

Heart health: Ongoing gum inflammation can increase your risk of heart and circulation problems.

Pregnancy: Poor gum health has been linked to complications such as premature birth and low birth weight. Protecting your gums helps protect your baby too.

Lung health: Bacteria from your mouth can travel into your lungs and may contribute to infections, especially if you’re more vulnerable.

For patients showing early signs of gum disease, we provide a structured gum health programme. This includes tailored oral hygiene instruction, targeted cleaning, and behaviour support to reverse gingivitis and manage risk factors.

When deeper pockets or periodontal concerns are present, we follow the British Society of Periodontology’s (BSP) staged treatment flowchart (find out more here: https://www.bsperio.org.uk/assets/downloads/BSP_Treatment_Flow_Chart_17_SCREEN_READY_ytube_link.pdf

Step 1: Oral health assessment, explanation of the condition, and risk factor management (including lifestyle support like smoking cessation or diabetes advice).

Step 2: Focused cleaning with subgingival instrumentation (root surface debridement), often combined with hygiene reinforcement.

We then reassess the gum health at review visits and either continue maintenance or proceed to more advanced care in line with your needs. This may include recommendation to refer to a specialist periodontist.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

  1. Assessment: Your hygienist will first check your teeth and gums to see how much plaque needs to be removed and identify any areas that require extra care.

  2. Cleaning: Your teeth will then be thoroughly cleaned with mechanical and/or hand instruments. If you have booked fluoride varnish or airflow treatment, these will also be carried out at this stage.

  3. Advice: To finish, your hygienist will give you personalised guidance on brushing and flossing, along with dietary advice and tips to help you maintain optimal oral health.

Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers

Most people benefit from a hygiene visit every 6 months. If you are prone to gum disease or heavy tartar build-up, your hygienist may recommend every 3–4 months instead. We tailor treatment recommendations to your specific needs.

During a hygienist appointment, your teeth are professionally cleaned to remove any hard deposits (tartar). This is done through a process called scaling and polishing.

Hygiene appointments are usually comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, let your hygienist know. They can adapt their approach or use numbing gels or local anaesthetic to make it more comfortable for you. You can expect some sensitivity of the teeth and soreness of gums for a few days after treatment.

The appointment will typically last between 30–60 minutes, depending on the level of treatment required.

Yes. If you choose the Diamond Polish (with airflow treatment), it removes surface stains caused by tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, leaving your teeth looking brighter. Please note this is not the same as professional teeth whitening.

Yes. Hygiene visits help prevent cavities and teach children good brushing habits from an early age.

Yes, we offer direct access to hygiene services. You’ll just need to complete a consent form before your appointment that you are choosing not to see a dentist first. You will then be advised on future treatment recommendations.
