50 years of National Smile Month

seb admin  |  14 May 2026  |  Uncategorised

Each year, we celebrate National Smile Month.

But in 2026, it’s an extra special occasion.

From 11th May to 11th June 2026, the Oral Health Foundation marks 50 years of the UK’s biggest oral health campaign; that’s five decades of improving smiles and raising oral health awareness.

Dentistry has certainly come along way in the last 50 years, but despite all the technological advances, the core campaign message is still the same, and still refreshingly simple:

Small habits make a BIG difference.

Over the last 50 years, National Smile Month has helped:

·      Encourage better daily oral care habits

·      Improve awareness around dental health

·      Support generations of families in looking after their smiles.

And that progress is SO important.

Because while modern dentistry can achieve more than ever before, prevention is always the best place to start.

The patients who maintain healthy smiles long-term usually aren’t doing anything dramatic.

Instead, they just stay consistent with the basics:

• Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes
• Keeping sugary foods and drinks under control
• Visiting the dentist regularly

These small daily habits help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, keep your smile looking its best, and support your overall wellbeing too.

So while this anniversary is a chance to reflect on how far dentistry has come over the last 50 years, it’s also a useful reminder that simple habits are the foundation of it all.

Whether that means improving your brushing routine, booking a hygiene appointment, or finally arranging the dental check-up you’ve been putting off for a while, I hope it’s the catalyst you need.

If you’re due a visit, or would simply like some advice on improving your oral health, we’re always here to help.

Here’s to 50 years of National Smile Month, and many more smiley years to come.
