Experiment Zone

Here are some great experiments to try out!

Taste Bud Tickler

Taste Bud Tickler You might be suprised how much of what you taste is linked with smells! Without your nose it can be pretty tricky to tell the difference between foods. See how well you can tell the flavours of food without your nose!

What you need:

  • A blindfold
  • A group of friends
  • 4 different flavours of yoghurt
  • Drinking water for everyone

What to do:

  • Blindfold a friend.
  • Ask your friend to pinch his or her nose.
  • Offer your friend one flavor of the food at a time.
  • Can he or she identify it? (Your friend might want a drink of water between the different foods.)
  • Offer the same food and tell your friend to unpinch his or her nose. Now does your friend know what it is?

Tooth Attack!

Tooth Attack

This easy experiment shows the effects of acid and alkaline foods on your teeth. Acidic foods include fizzy drinks and sweets. Alkaline foods include vinegar. This experiment will show you what happens to your teeth when you have too many foods and drinks like this. Bones are used in this experiment as they are similar to teeth and contain lots of calcium.

What you need:

  • 2 clean chicken bones (ask your parents to save them for you the next time you have chicken for dinner)
  • 1 container
  • 1 bottle of vinegar

What to do:
Pour about 5cm of vinegar into the container, so that it covers up the chicken bones. Soak the clean chicken bones in the vinegar overnight.

Check the bones after they've soaked in the vinegar overnight. Are they softer or harder? Be sure to throw the bones away in the garbage after you're finished.

Best Brushing!

Brushing

Here are some top tips on how to make sure your teeth are perfectly brushed!

  • Make sure that you brush every single surface, moving your brush in small circles. Dont't forget to brush the surfaces near your tongue as these are often missed.
  • Time yourself! Get an egg timer of a stop watch in the bathroom and time yourself for 2 minutes- you may find that it is longer than you think!
  • Watch out for your gums! if they bleed a lot it may be because you're missing areas of your teeth.
  • Use a toothpaste which has fluoride in it. This helps to stops teeth from getting decayed. If you're not sure which one to use, just ask your dentist when ou next visit them.
  • When you brush spit out but dont rinse out with water as you wash all the toothpaste away. You need to brush them twice a day every day -first thing in the morning and last thing before you go to bed!

What causes tooth decay?!

Tooth Decay

There's a lot going on in your mouth-you might be suprised to find out that your mouth has lots of tiny groups of living organisms called bacteria which move around your teeth, lips, gums and tongue!

DON'T WORRY! Having bacteria in your mouth is a normal thing. While some of the bacteria can be harmful, most are not and some are even helpful. However, some of these bacteria can stick to the surfaces of your teeth and if they're not removed by brushing. This bigger group of bacteria is called PLAQUE and it's a whitish creamy paste which you can rub off.

Plaque causes holes in the teeth which need to be filled. By following the brushing tips and tips on foods you can avoid getting the holes!

Teeth and Food!

Teeth Food Sugary foods and sticky foods get trapped in the groves in your teeth (these are called the FISSURES). Follow these top tips to help to prevent tooth decay!

  • Avoid eating lots of sugary sweets, crips and chocolates and drinking fizzy and sugary drinks. Fruit juices have lots of sugar so try to drink them with breakfast lunch of dinner if you want them and stick to water in between.
  • Snacking means that the teeth have lots of sugar attacks. Have no more than 4 sugar moments a day-so breakfast, lunch, dinner and then one more snack.
  • Drink lots of water-it's breat for your brain as well as your teeth. Try to drink only plain, still water in between meals to protect your teeth against decay.
  • Try to have lots of different fruits and vegetables with your meals-it's fun to try lots of different things so you can decide what your favourite things are!
