Back to school

If the weather over the last few days is anything to go by, one thing is clear:

Summer is over.

There are hints everywhere that Autumn is on its way – the evenings are getting darker, the leaves are beginning to brown, and – of course – the pavements are full of children on their way to school once more.

And if you’ve got a child under your care at home, you’ll want to ensure that they start this year as they mean to go on, building routines that’ll keep them happy and healthy.

So, here’s our starter for 10, from a dentist’s perspective:

1. Rethink the packed lunch

It’s tempting to include a treat every day — but sticky snacks linger on teeth and increase decay risk. Try crunchy carrots, cheese cubes or natural yogurt instead.

2. Make brushing fun

Brushing doesn’t have to be boring. Try sticker charts, music, or apps like:

  • Brush DJ – Plays 2 minutes of music to make brushing fun
  • Toothsavers – Game where kids brush to save characters
  • Disney MagicTimer – Reveals Disney characters as kids brush
  • Chomper Chums – Care for animals by making healthy choices
  • Brush Up – Animated coach teaches proper brushing

3. Stock up

Don’t get caught short. Toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss are just as important as school shoes. Keep spares on hand for when things get lost or run out unexpectedly.

4. Protect that smile

If your child plays sports, a fitted mouthguard can prevent painful (and costly) dental injuries – one less thing to worry about on the sidelines!

5. Lead by example

Brush and floss together. Visit the dentist together. They’ll copy what they see — and routines now last a lifetime.

Oral care isn’t just for the start of the school year — it’s a year-round habit. By making these small changes now, you’re not just setting them up for the term ahead, but for a lifetime of confident, healthy smiles.
