Brightside Dental’s Support for Sport Relief

Last quarter Brightside Dental has supported Sport Relief charity, which since 1985 has helped countless people thanks to the amazing generosity and fundraising brilliance. Thanks to all our clients, family, friends and team members who helped raise £390.

Our practice had a competition taking place to raise donations for Sports Relief – ‘Guess how many tubes of toothpaste are in the tombola?’.

The winner was announced on 23rd March and has won an Electric Oral-B toothbrush and all of the toothpaste in the tombola! Congratulations!

A big thank you to those who participated and made a difference to many people. 50% of funds raised are used to make a difference right here in the UK , the other 50% is used to transform lives across the worlds poorest communities.

Anti-Wrinkle treatment By using facial muscles repeatedly throughout our lifetime, the skin is creased in areas of greatest use. The aging process causes the slow down of collagen and Elastin production in the skin so that as we get older these areas of over use become damaged and the lines become permanent. Anti-Wrinkle treatment reduces movement of muscles in these areas and the skin stops being creased and is allowed to recover causing the lines to soften or even fade away.

From £150/area

Dermal Fillers are used to soften and contour lines, folds, and wrinkles. The most commonly used dermal fillers are Hyaluronic based. The solution is injected into the skin to add volume and create a more youthful appearance. Dermal Fillers are an ideal solution for patients wanting to soften deep lines from the mouth to nose area, lip lines, enhance thin lips, create a more define lip border, lift the corners of the mouth, redefine cheek bones, jawline, chin, forehead, nose.

Lip Fillers

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a common and often embarrassing problem for many people, especially sweating of the underarms. Injections into the affected areas are likely to give you the freedom from embarrassment you wished for. The simple treatment involves a few injections into the skin, where sweating is the greatest, to block the action of the nerves that supply the sweat glands. The effects of this treatment can last for several months leaving you more confident to enjoy life. It’ll leave you wondering you you’ve lived without it for so long

From £450

Skin Micro-needling One technology that has been proven to deliver amazing results time and time again is Dermapen Skin Micro-needling. The treatment is a form of collagen induction therapy where a series of needles penetrate the skin causing thousands of micro injuries at a vertical angle using a specialist medical device, for both faster and more precise needle penetration. The procedure leads to increased collagen production, which effectively repairs scars, reduces discolouration and renews tired looking skin.

Healthy Mouth Habits for Young Children

Your child’s baby teeth are at risk for decay as soon as they first appear—which is typically around age 6 months. Tooth decay in infants and toddlers is often referred to as baby bottle tooth decay. It most often occurs in the upper front teeth, but other teeth may also be affected.

Teach your child these simple, yet important, habits that will keep their mouth healthy.

1. Caring is not sharing.

Be mindful of using your child’s utensils and cleaning pacifiers with your mouth. Cavities are, in fact, contagious, and can be spread through germs alone. It’s that easy, and easier yet to prevent.

2. Drinking water.

Giving children water as their main drink early on helps to instil that habit in them for later, plus the natural fluoride in water helps to protect their teeth from cavities.

3. 2 minutes + 2 times per day brushing.

As soon as your child is able to brush their own teeth, let them. Teach them proper technique and reinforce adequate amount of time spent brushing. Ensure the toothpaste they’re using has fluoride and is age appropriate. At an early age, it’s best to supervise their brushing and make sure you use a small amount of toothpaste as they will swallow it.

4. Help prevent tooth decay.

Consult with your dentist to find out if your child should have dental sealants or fluoride varnish to prevent this occurrence.

5. Encourage regular cups.

Instead of sippy cups, try to get your child to drink out of a regular cup by their first birthday.

Last, but certainly not least, teach your children that good dental care is fun, not a chore! Turn it into a game, sing a song, dance around, or give a listen to a brushing playlist for their enjoyment!

Can You Guess How Many Toothpaste Tubes Are In The Tombola?

At Brightside Dental, our involvement in charitable and community events started when the entire team sat down and thought about what we actually do and want to do. We decided that the small things we do for our clients can make a big difference in some people’s lives. So why stop here? Continuing along these lines we looked deeper into what makes our dental clinic different from others. We all do our best to improve our services, to regularly train and educate ourselves, to achieve the best results for the benefit of our customers.

But what is the extra factor that makes us Brightside Dental? Friendliness, understanding, involvement were some of the words that came to our minds during a brainstorm meeting about our mission statement. They all relate to being surrounded by others, to being in a society. So why not giving back to the community that has made us who we are now? That’s how the idea of donations every month towards different causes came to us, because a small change can make a big difference.

We are currently supporting Sport Relief which, since 1985, has helped countless people thanks to the amazing generosity and fundraising brilliance of the British public.

Of all the money raised by the public through Sport Relief, 50% is used to make a difference, right here at home, in the UK. The other 50% goes towards transforming lives across the world’s poorest communities.

In the last two years, Sport Relief cash has helped….

Treated over 900,000 people across Africa with anti-malarial drugs.
Helped over 3.4 million people in Africa through maternal, neonatal and child health funding.
Helped more than 50,000 people, in the UK, living with a mental health problem.
For more information please look at https://www.sportrelief.com/

We will be having events in the practice and some of our team members will be undertaking a run locally at Oak Hill Park on Saturday 24th March. If you would like to sponsor us, please click on the link https://my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/brightsidedental/donate or, better still, why not join us!

Can you guess the number of toothpaste tubes in the tombola? Either pop into the practice or you can donate online and email us your guess at [email protected]. Entries just £1 each and all proceeds go to Sport Relief. The winner will be announced on Friday 23rd March and will win an electric toothbrush plus all the toothpaste in the tombola.

National No Smoking Day 14th March 2018

No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness day in the United Kingdom which is intended to help smokers who want to quit smoking. The first No Smoking Day was on Ash Wednesday in 1984 and it now takes place on the second Wednesday in March.

Each year, the campaign is promoted with a theme, which this year is Pick Your Way. The thinking behind this is that we are all different and by choosing the best way for you to quit, you have a higher likelihood of being successful.

Here are the British Heart Foundation’s 10 Steps to Stopping Smoking https://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-matters-magazine/wellbeing/stop-smoking/smoking-tips

As most people know, smoking has many negative effects on your health. By stopping smoking, here are some of the dental benefits you may have:

Reduction in gum disease and the severity of it and increased effectiveness of gum disease treatments
Lower risk of tooth loss (for smokers it’s twice that of non-smokers)
Infected tooth root (twice that of non-smokers)
Increased ability to fight infection, including in the mouth and gums
Faster healing of gum tissue after oral surgery or from injury and less chance of infection
Reduced stain build up and discolouration of the teeth
Lower risk of mouth cancer

Manual Versus Electric Toothbrush: Which Is Better?

There has been a long time silent battle the toothbrush aisle. That battle is between the basic,    manual toothbrush and the newer, more advanced electric toothbrushes. Manual toothbrushes are obviously low cost, easily available, and variety of styles are available, and great for travel- in short, it is convenient. Electric toothbrushes on the other hand are much expensive. Buying the electric one will set back with a one time-high cost and buying replacement heads is a comparable price to that of the manual. However, electric toothbrushes make proper brushing practice easy, they do a better job of removing plaque, and kids usually find them more fun to use.

Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are more effective against removing plaque and reducing gum problems. Here is one such study  http://www.cochrane.org/CD002281/ORAL_poweredelectric-toothbrushes-compared-to-manual-toothbrushes-for-maintaining-oral-health

The rotating brush heads on electric toothbrushes allow the user to simply guide the toothbrush gently across their teeth and let the brush do all the work for them. This is great since many people do not actually know the proper brushing techniques needed to keep your mouth healthy. Another plus is that many electric toothbrushes now feature timers. Children will enjoy using them as they look fancy.

Whichever toothbrush you decide to use, don’t get carried away with brushing. Excessive brushing has its risks. Too much pressure and too frequent brushing can abrade enamel, or the root of the tooth if the gum has receded. Also, it should be noted that you could have the best and most expensive toothbrush available, however you need to use it twice a day and in the correct way for it to be effective.

It can often be confusing on which brush is best to buy as they are so many available. With the battery powered brushes, the two main brands we recommend at Brightside Dental are Braun Oral B and Philips Sonicare. If you need any help choosing the best option for you, do let us know.

Learning Along With Supporting Charity

Six members of the Brightside Team attended a 2 day conference in rainy Manchester recently titled “Creating An Inspirational Dentistry Workplace.” We learnt a huge amount over the time on ways we can improve our levels of customer service to our patients as well as working together as a team

better.

Full participation from the Brightside Team

We came back with plenty of ideas we will implement over the coming months. We all learnt a lot, had a great time and got to know each other better.

Presenting our donation of £1005 to Dental Mavericks

As well as the conference, we attended a charity dinner raising money for Dental Mavericks, who we have supported regularly for the past few years. We are very pleased to say we contributed a donation of £1005, which went towards the total of almost £15000 raised during the event.

Reducing Fears and Improving Smiles

Andy found Brightside Dental as he had some fears about dental treatment. He wanted The Wand for numbing instead of the traditional syringe and needle which worked very well. Once his mouth was healthy and stable, we carried out some teeth whitening and placed a crown on a tooth which had root canal treatment in the past and was very discoloured and was having a big impact with Andy’s smile. You can see the results in the photos.

Taking Care Of Your Toothbrush

The toothbrush is a vital tool for properly taking care of your teeth. Taking extra precautions to ensure that your entire family keeps their toothbrushes clean is one great way to fight germs and keep everyone healthy. Here are some tips to keep your mouth and your toothbrush clean.

• One toothbrush should have one owner – If you share your toothbrush, you could also be sharing bodily fluids and bacteria, increasing your risk of infection. If you use an electric toothbrush, you can have one base unit and separate heads for family members – just ensure they don’t get mixed up!

• Toothbrushes need privacy, too – For the same reason, when storing brushes, make sure they are placed in such a way that they can’t touch each other.

• Give your toothbrush some space – Keep your brush in a clean, well-ventilated spot and make sure it has time to dry in between uses. Keeping your toothbrush in a closed, moist space regularly can encourage the growth of germs.

• Showering is good for your toothbrush – Before and after each use, rinse your toothbrush under running water to eliminate excess toothpaste and other residue. Rub your fingers along the bristles – but only after washing your hands; no use substituting one set of germs for another. When you’re finished, shake out the brush to accelerate drying.

• Let your toothbrush indulge in a nice bath – You may be able to reduce the amount of bacteria on your brush by soaking it in anti-bacterial mouthwash after use.

• Don’t get too attached to your toothbrush – change your old toothbrush or the head for a new one at least as often as every three months. Of course, if you’ve been sick with the flu, a cold, or a mouth infection, say goodbye to your toothbrush and move on to a new, germ-free one immediately.

Remember – What’s good for your toothbrush is good for your teeth!

Charity Of The Month – International Cricket Academy

Each month at Brightside Dental we decide on a charitable cause that could benefit from the donations we make as a promise to our clients who have patiently waited to be seen for more than 10 minutes past their booked appointment time. Each time we are running late we make a donation to our chosen charity on their behalf.

This quarter we are supporting the International Cricket Academy (ICA). This is a venture to challenge children’s inactivity internationally via cricket. We are supporting them throughout January as our dentist Paarth, who is a keen cricketer, will be joining ICA on their next venture to India in February 2018.

ICA is on a mission to spread the power of cricket throughout schools and communities in Rajkot, India. The volunteers will be providing coaching and donating cricket bats to students. Donations will give young people the chance to play cricket, learn teamwork, discipline and respect from playing a team sport and a small contribution can make a huge difference to help promote health and happiness.

To find out more about ICA visit https://intcricketacademy.com
