Don’t forget this in 2026!

January is the perfect time for a new start, and for lots of us, improving health is on the agenda for 2026.

That’s great – getting some exercise and improving your diet are both noble resolutions, but here’s your friendly dentist reminder: don’t forget about your mouth!

Science shows us that the link between oral health and overall health and wellbeing is much stronger than most people realise, and taking care of your mouth is an important part of looking after your whole body.

Here are just some of the ways your mouth health can affect your overall wellbeing:

1. Heart Problems

Gum disease isn’t just about swollen gums or bad breath. The inflammation caused by gum infections can enter your bloodstream, potentially increasing your risk of a heart attack or stroke. If your gums are sore, red or bleed when brushing, don’t ignore it; early treatment can protect more than just your smile.

2. Diabetes

People with diabetes are more prone to gum infections. In turn, untreated gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, keeping your mouth healthy is a big part of managing your condition.

3. Bad Breath

Everyone gets bad breath now and then, but if it sticks around despite brushing, mints and mouthwash, it might be something more. Chronic bad breath (halitosis) can be caused by gum disease, dry mouth, acid reflux, sinus infections or even kidney problems. If mints aren’t cutting it, it’s a good idea to check in with your dentist.

The good news is that maintaining a good standard of oral health isn’t rocket science – start with the basics:

– Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste
– Floss daily or use interdental brushes to clean between teeth
– Limit sugary and acidic foods, especially between meals
– Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid dry mouth
– Avoid smoking and reduce alcohol intake

Catching small issues early can help you avoid much bigger problems later on.

If it’s been a while since your last check-up or if you’ve noticed anything unusual, please don’t wait.
